Antone “Tony” Gomes, 76, of Worcester, Massachusetts, passed away on October 11, 2025, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Tony was born and raised in Worcester, MA. After finishing high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, proudly serving during the Vietnam War. Tony’s life reflected an enduring commitment to service and dedication to his community. He worked for many years with the Department of Youth Services, where he was deeply respected for his compassion, mentorship, and steady guidance.
Tony was a man of many joys. He had a deep love for jazz music and was passionate about exercise, health, and fitness. He was dedicated to the practice of martial arts and highly skilled in various self-defense techniques. From his early career at the YMCA of Worcester and throughout his life, Tony freely shared his time, training, and knowledge of fitness with others. Those who encountered Tony were inspired by his strength and positivity. He was confident, selfless, and always willing to step in to help others. Known for his big smile and contagious sense of humor, Tony brought laughter and warmth to every gathering and was cherished by all who knew him.
He leaves behind his loving daughter Zeline Hues and her husband Samuel Afutu of Worcester, MA; his son Tony Hues Jr. of New York; his brother John S. Gomes Jr. of Georgia; and his sisters Rev. Dr. Catherine Reed and Evangelist Mary Jardine, both of Worcester, and Muriel Dawkins of Cleveland, Ohio. Tony also leaves behind Valerie and Yvette Hues of North Carolina, whom he loved and cared for as his own daughters; grandchildren Kemesha and Jaidan Samuels , Robert Afutu, Elijah, Antonia and great grandson Quincy; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly.
He was predeceased by his mother Mary Gomes, stepfather John Gomes, father Robert Mason, sister Olivene Gomes Moxley, brothers Charles Coates, Clarence Gomes, and Frank Gomes, and his beloved daughters of the heart, Erika and Danielle Hues.
Tony will be remembered for his strength, big heart, and the love he shared with his family and friends. His legacy of service, laughter, and kindness will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday October 18th, 2025 at 1:00pm at Covenant Saint Andrews, United Methodist Church, 24 Hamilton St. Worcester, MA 01604
