Carol Ann (Usinger) Merz, 88, of Charlton, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on December 15, 1937, in East Providence, Rhode Island, Carol was the daughter of the late Emil and Helen (Brown) Usinger.
Carol is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, John William Merz; her daughters, Terri (Merz) Emerson and her husband Nathan, Katherine Merz, and Gretchen (Merz) Cutler and her husband Michael. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Abigail (Emerson) Finan and her husband Kevin; Andrew Emerson and his wife Ellen; Derek Briner and his wife Elizabeth; Melissa Briner; Shane Gilman; and William Cutler. She was the proud great-grandmother of Cameron Trundy, Cadence Briner, Aubrey Finan, Lillian Finan, and Mia Ortiz.
She is also survived by her brother, Emil Usinger and his wife Bonnie; her sister-in-law, Janice Usinger, wife of her late brother William Usinger; many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and her faithful dog, Jack.
Carol was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was also a second mother to Stephanie (Porter) Scotland and Celeste (Porter) Slade. She treasured time spent with family and friends, especially at her summer cottage in Maine. Her many interests included antiquing, camping, hiking, cross-country skiing, quilting, sewing, serving her church, and helping others.
Known for her warmth, generosity, and unwavering compassion, Carol touched countless lives. She would help anyone in need without hesitation. Her infectious laughter, bright smile, and kind heart brought comfort, joy, and inspiration to all who knew her.
Carol dedicated herself to raising her three daughters and later worked for DIC in Littleton, Massachusetts. She also worked as a nurse's aide at Littleton House Nursing Home. Active in her community, she served for many years as a Girl Scout leader and coached cheerleading for both Littleton Pop Warner and Littleton High School.
She was loved beyond measure and will be missed every day. We will remember her for her silly sense of humor, her radiant spirit, and the love she so freely gave to family, friends, and everyone she met. Her light remains in our hearts, and her love will stay with us always.
