Francis “Mickie” Michaleen (Hammill) Barry
Worcester/Westborough – Mickie Barry 89, passed peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on March 25, 2026. She was born in Worcester, February 14, 1937, daughter of James and Mary Hammill. She was raised in Worcester and attended Notre Dame Academy. It was during her time there that she met the love of her life, Tom. Tom volunteered his time assisting the nuns as a driver and general handyman and the two would meet secretly when he finished his obligations for the day. After graduating, she attended Anna Maria College where she acquired her bachelor’s degree in Ealy Childhood Education. She became an elementary school teacher, teaching second grade in the Town of Southbridge. This is where her lifelong love of children and teaching began. Tom and she married in 1960, and they resided in Worcester until he was accepted to University of Notre Dame when they moved to Indiana. She cherished her time as a stay-at-home mom as her family was always the most important thing in her life. They returned to Worcester area, settling in Westborough where she went to work in the daycare field. After several years, she started her own daycare, Misty Meadow Daycare that she ran for over 20 years. The daycare families and the children who attended were more than clients to her, they became members of her extended family.
Mickie was dedicated mother and grandmother; she truly treasured the time spent with her family and friends. She loved large family gatherings at home and there was always a place at the table for anyone who wanted to join. She was a true nurturer and no matter where she went children would always seem to be drawn to her loving spirit. She was always available to tend to anyone’s children if they were in need of care and was truly everyone’s “Gramma”. She considered herself blessed to have been able to raise five of her grandchildren after the death of their mother.
Mickie cherished her faith and was an active member of St. Luke’s Parish in Westboro for more than 40 years. She was a eucharistic minister, CCD teacher and very active with the Women’s Club. She attended many retreats with the Women’s Club, most hosted by her sister, Sr. Mary Hammill.
She loved to travel, socialize with good friends, gamble and was avid reader, always had a book in her hand and of course loved a good glass of wine.
Mickie is survived by her children Thomas Barry Jr. and wife Susan of Millbury, Mary Oliver and husband James of Sutton; James Barry of Worcester; Cathy Cervi and husband James of Spencer and Becky Federico of Auburn; fourteen grandchildren, Cameron Barry, Elisha Hourihan, Joshua Oliver, Jessica Alves, Ryan Barry, James Barry Jr., Brittany Hughes, Christopher Barry, Brandy Barry, Cody Barry, Gabby Cervi, Anthony Cervi, Mia Federico, and Thomas Federico, as well as 15 great grandchildren.
Mickie is preceded in death by her husband Tom; her sister, St. Mary Hammill; her granddaughter Michaleen O’Connell, her great granddaughter Alexis Alves and daughter in-law Cheryl (Sealey) Barry.
A Mass, Celebration of Life and interment with her beloved Tom is being planned for this summer.
