Joan K. Halloran

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Matriarch, Joan Karna (McCabe) Halloran, on August 23, 2026, peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Boston, MA and graduated from South Boston High School in 1951. Joan was a cherished resident of West Boylston since 1960.

Joan leaves her devoted husband of over 68 years Bob, her loving children Susan Haines (Steve), Lisa Halloran, Paula Powers, Craig Halloran (Linda), her precious grandchildren Vanessa McHugh, Joshua Haines (Emily), David Robert Powers (Jessica), Taylor Powers (Jenny), Karina Halloran (Moustafa) and Cameron Halloran. Joan adored her great-grandchildren Madalyn McHugh, Noelle McHugh, Iyla Haines, Meredith Powers and Oliver Powers. Joan leaves her sister and brother-in-law, Judith and Jerry Ferrera, her brother Chuck, along with brother-in-law Leo Halloran (Nancy) and cousins, nieces and nephews. Joan was predeceased by her parents Lawrence and Karna (Peterson) McCabe, brother Larry and countless other family members and friends.

Joan was a remarkable woman with endless talents—a brilliant seamstress, knitter, avid reader (having read thousands of books), a professional shopper (especially Macy's) and an extraordinary cook always ready to try a new recipe. Her Lemon Fluff Cake earned her recognition as Family Circle magazine's "Homemaker of the Month" in 1958. While raising her children, she was a volunteer with The CASA Project in Worcester County and taught reading to underprivileged women.

Joan and Bob found immense joy in attending the events and milestones of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, celebrating each moment with love and pride.

Joan was a wonderful friend to all, but she treasured her 81-year friendship with her best friend Joan Novicki. Joan shared a special bond with her sister Judy, enjoying weekly outings together exploring new restaurants, cultural activities, walking Castle Island, reminiscing around Southie and always searching for a bakery somewhere. These outings became more special when their brother Chuck moved close by and joined in.

Joan's family would like to give special thanks to Susan Zweizig MD at UMass Memorial Hospital for her many years of caring for Mom when her cancer first appeared in 2016. A heartfelt thank you to all the nurses at UMass University Campus ACC Infusion Clinic, you're a special group of people. We also thank all the Hospice nurses who helped and guided us with our journey since May. You gave us 3 wonderful months of having our Mom keep on living her best life!

Laughter was an essential part of her life whether at herself or trying to tell one of her many jokes!  Her nurturing spirit, kindness and words of wisdom will leave a lasting impression on everyone she met.  There aren't enough words to describe how much we will miss our JoJo, MiMi Joan, Gram, and GiGi.  We know we all have a piece of her within us.

Family and friends are invited to Joan's Celebration of Life "Open House" that will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 12 pm to 4 pm at Wachusett Country Club, 187 Prospect Street, West Boylston MA.  

Joan held a special place in her heart for her daughter-in-law Linda and The Breast Friends Connection support group.
