Robert George Marengo (88), lovingly known as Bob, passed away on April 22, 2025, at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, MA, after a short illness. He was born on March 24, 1937, in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of George Elmer Marengo and Ruth Catherine Marengo, who predeceased him. Bob's life was filled with dedication, love for family, and a pursuit of joy in every endeavor.
An alumnus of Valparaiso University in Indiana, where he studied Business Administration, Bob's education laid the foundation for a lifetime of hard work and perseverance. He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, where he made many lifelong friends. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army National Guard during the early 1960s, exemplifying his strong sense of duty.
Bob met his wife Betty (Karn) in the fall of 1964 at a mutual friend’s party in Indianapolis. He crossed the room to meet her, three months later asked her to marry him, and in April of 1965 they wed in Macy, IN (Betty’s hometown). They moved to Wisconsin, and within a few years welcomed two little ones to their family…a daughter, Michelle and a son, Michael. With their family complete, they moved to the East Coast, and spent the rest of their years in the Hudson/Marlboro area of MA and Mount Dora, FL. On April 10th of this year, they celebrated 60 years of marriage – via a Facetime call from his hospital room to her nursing home room. They still had that spark up until the end.
Bob devoted many years of his career to sales and sales management of paper and industrial products. His journey took him from Milwaukee, WI to Hudson, MA, where he worked for Rourke-Eno Paper Company, and later to Orlando, FL, where he managed a small salesforce for Redd Paper Company. He was passionate about his work, displaying an unwavering commitment that shaped his professional identity.
Anyone who knew Bob could attest to his strong, dependable nature. Even into his 87th year, he continued to work, taking joy in various roles after retiring from sales. He enjoyed driving positions, which included the Disney World monorail, an airport limo, cars for local dealerships, and most fondly, driving local private school students to their doctor appointments. This last role earned him the endearing nickname of "Grandpa" among the many young lives he touched.
Bob created countless cherished memories with his beloved family, frequently traveling to Florida to visit relatives and to Indiana to connect with his wife Betty's family. A highlight of these trips was the magical experiences he introduced to his family at Disney World—a passion that has been passed down through generations, with one of his grandsons even participating in the Disney College Program at Epcot. He also loved spending time on the boat at Fort Meadow Reservoir, teaching his children to waterski and celebrating the Fourth of July with fireworks from the lake.
Beyond family vacations, Bob was a vibrant member of his community. He was a member of the Marlborough Country Club for over 20 years, where he and Betty made lifelong friendships and participated in the "Scotchie" league on Friday nights. His involvement in the Marlborough Lions Club, where he served as "King Lion" for a year, reflected his commitment to service and camaraderie.
Bob took pride in his accomplishments, notably his remarkable hole-in-one achievement in Hawaii, a plaque for which he proudly displayed above his desk. His love for Boston sports was unmistakable; he held season tickets for the Patriots, Red Sox, and Celtics throughout the years. Friends and family will fondly remember his spirited cheering for New England teams, his enthusiasm ringing loud and clear even in his later years.
He leaves behind a loving family that will miss him dearly. His devoted wife, Betty Marengo, resides in Northborough, MA, along with daughter Michelle Marengo of Worcester, MA, and son Michael Marengo, accompanied by wife Beth, of Dudley, MA. Four grandchildren—David Youngerman of Worcester, MA, and Chase, Riley, and Owen Marengo of Dudley, MA—brought immense joy to his life. Surviving him also is his brother George Marengo and wife Kathy, of Raleigh, NC and many nieces and nephews.
Bob will be remembered for his warmth, strength, and unyielding love for his family. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him, and he will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered in the stories shared and the memories cherished.
In honoring their loved one’s wishes, the family will not hold a public service or gathering. Instead, they invite you to take a moment for personal reflection and cherish the memories shared.
